Kauai police say a child has been hospitalized in serious condition after a solo crash Tuesday on Kuhio Highway.
Police said at about 5 p.m., a 2025 Toyota SUV heading northbound on the highway near Wailua Golf Course sideswiped a guardrail, struck a utility pole and then went into a spin. The child was ejected from the vehicle during the spin, police said, and suffered serious bodily injuries.
The child was taken to Wilcox Medical Center for initial treatment and later transferred to Kapiāolani Medical Center for Women & Children on Oahu. Police did not say how old the child was.
Based on preliminary information, police said a 35-year-old woman from Wailua is believed to have been driving. Two additional passengers were not injured, and no other vehicles were involved.
The exact cause of the collision remains under investigation, and toxicology results are pending. The highway was closed for approximately two hours while police investigated the crash site.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is urged to call Officer Henshaw at 808-241-1616. Anonymous tips can also be reported to Crime Stoppers Kauai at 808-246-8300, or via the P3 Tips mobile app.
