A dentist in Nottingham was sentenced this past week after admitting he illegally distributed opioids and abused his prescribing authority.
Dr. Andrew T. Fried pleaded guilty Nov. 20, 2025, to one count of distributing narcotics and one count of prescribing controlled dangerous substances outside the scope of legitimate dental practice. Fried owned and operated Perry Hall Family Dental in Nottingham.
On Dec. 15, Circuit Court Judge Andrew Battista sentenced Fried to 10 years in prison, suspending all but one day, and ordered three years of probation. Fried is also barred from participating in federal health care programs.
“Every Marylander who sits in a dental chair should trust that they’re receiving competent, professional care,” Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown said in a statement. “This sentence protects Dr. Fried’s patients from further unsafe treatment and eliminates a source of opioids in our communities.”
According to a statement from Brown’s office, Fried used his dental license and Drug Enforcement Administration registration to unlawfully prescribe oxycodone from April 2022 through May 2025. The prescriptions were written without medical necessity for a former dental assistant, and the two split the pills between themselves, authorities said.
As part of his plea, Fried admitted he also purchased oxycodone pills weekly from the assistant, who obtained them from family members. Oxycodone is a Schedule II controlled substance, meaning it carries a high risk of abuse and addiction.
