A Florida Senate committee next week will take up a proposal that would designate Oct. 14 each year as “Charlie Kirk Day of Remembrance” in the state.
The Senate Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee is scheduled Tuesday to consider the bill (SB 194), filed by Sen. Jonathan Martin, R-Fort Myers.
Kirk, a co-founder and executive director of the national conservative group Turning Point USA, was murdered in September during an appearance at Utah Valley University. Oct. 14 was Kirk’s birthday.
Rep. Yvette Benarroch, R-Marco Island, and Rep. Meg Weinberger, R-Palm Beach Gardens, have filed an identical bill (HB 125) in the House. The bills are filed for the legislative session that will start Jan. 13.
