Christopher Newport dominated the third quarter Thursday night and went on to earn a 99-73 women’s basketball victory at North Carolina Wesleyan in Rocky Mount.
The Captains (8-2), unranked in the d3hoops.com top 25 but 18th in the coaches’ poll, were down 16-11 but came back to lead 21-18 after one quarter and 44-37 at the half. Then they put the Bishops away by outscoring them 36-17 in the third quarter — CNU’s fourth-highest total in the quarters era, which began 10 seasons ago.
Mia Wilson scored 19 points, Sydney Worsham 13, Caitlin Crump 12 and Sarah Pritz 10. Elizabeth Creed had eight points and a team-leading nine rebounds.
Anaya Hall led NCWU with 18 points, and Dorinda Jordan had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Virginia Tech 68, Florida 64: The Hokies (7-2) won their ACC/SEC Challenge game at Cassell Coliseum behind Carys Baker’s 23 points and 10 rebounds and Mel Daley’s 12 points. A 6-0 run gave Tech a 63-57 lead, and the Hokies stayed in front.
Liv McGill led the Gators (8-2) with 30 points but committed 10 of Florida’s 22 turnovers.
No. 2 Texas 79, No. 11 North Carolina 64: Jordan Lee scored a career-best 22 points, Madison Booker added 18 and the Longhorns (9-0) beat the Tar Heels (8-2) in Austin in the ACC/SEC Challenge. Texas has won 31 straight home games, this one largely by outscoring UNC 47-25 in the middle two quarters.
Kyla Oldacre had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Longhorns. Elina Aarnisalo led North Carolina with 17 points and Indya Nivar scored 16, but it was the Tar Heels’ seventh straight loss against AP top-five opposition.
No. 3 South Carolina 79, No. 22 Louisville 77: Madina Okot had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the visiting Gamecocks (8-1) against the Cardinals (7-3) in the ACC/SEC Challenge.
Okot hit the first of two free throws with eight seconds left to put the Gamecocks up two. Louisville had a chance, but Tajianna Roberts missed a 3-pointer off the inbounds pass. Okot missed two free throws with two seconds remaining, but Louisville’s Anaya Hardy could not grab the ball cleanly enough to get off a chance for a winning shot. Roberts led Louisville with 20 points.
Radford 97, Navy 84, 2 OTs: Joi Williams scored 36 points, the most by a Highlander since February 1994, as Radford (6-5) rallied past the Midshipmen (5-3).
Former Catholic High and William & Mary player Cate Carlson had 19 points, including a key 3 late in regulation, five rebounds and three assists for Radford.
The Highlanders outscored Navy 22-10 in the fourth quarter and 19-6 in the second overtime.
Navy’s Zanai Barnett-Gay had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
