ALDI tops the list for low prices, while Roche Bros leads on quality in latest Consumers’ Checkbook findings.
Consumers’ Checkbook has released its latest update on which Boston-area grocery stores offer the best prices and quality.
While ALDI topped the list for best prices and Roche Bros. led in quality, two other notable standouts will probably come as no surprise to Boston-area shoppers: Market Basket and Wegmans.
According to the report, Market Basket — despite its continued family power struggle over its ownership — stood out for its low prices and favorable ratings for quality.
Market Basket was one of the area’s top-scoring chains for the quality of its produce and meat, and its prices were 15% lower than the average at all the stores the surveyors shopped.
Wegmans, which is continuing its East Coast expansion with five stores in the Boston area, continues to earn high ratings from its customers for quality. In the latest survey, 81% judged it “superior” overall.
Despite not having the lowest prices in the region, the report says it remains competitive. On average, its prices were about the same as Shaw’s, 3% lower than Stop & Shop, and 17% lower than Whole Foods. It remained more expensive than Walmart, Market Basket, and Price Rite.
ALDI, the German-based discounter, stood out for its low prices, which were 28% below the all-store average. ALDI’s per-unit prices were even as low as BJ’s and Costco’s.
The report explains that the low prices are due to the store’s small format, lowering overhead costs, and its ability to carry its own brands and limited items.
Meanwhile, 79% of survey respondents also rated Trader Joe’s as “superior” for “overall quality.” The store prices were about the same as those at Wegmans and Shaw’s.
While Roche Bros and Whole Foods ranked highly in quality, their prices were 17% and 18% higher than the average prices at all stores surveyed.
Lastly, most large chains received poor customer ratings, with Target scoring the lowest, followed by Hannaford, Shaw’s, Star Market, Stop & Shop, and Walmart.
Consumers’ Checkbook researchers shopped stores using a 150-item list to compare prices, and surveyed its members to evaluate stores’ quality of products and service. The nonprofit is an independent organization that provides unbiased reviews and information.
