The North Little Rock Public Library System announced it will not renew the Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub’s lease in 2026 following a unanimous vote by the library board on Nov. 17.
The Hub opened in 2014 offering classes ranging from woodworking to programming to 3D printing. NLRPLS absorbed The Hub in early 2025, which will continue operations through the end of the year. Programs and maker services will remain available to the public during the transition period.
According to NLRPLS, the decision came down to higher than expected operational costs, and with The Hub’s reliance on grant funding, the changing grant landscape created additional challenges for long-term planning.
Library leaders said despite “dedication of Hub staff and strong community engagement, continuing operations at this scale is not financially sustainable.”

Board chair Sonny Rhodes said the decision reflects the board’s responsibility to the system’s future.
“Our fiduciary duty requires us to protect the long-term financial health of the North Little Rock Public Library System,” Rhodes said. “After reviewing the full picture, we determined that continuing to operate the Innovation Hub at its current cost level would jeopardize the stability of the entire system. This was not an easy decision, but it was the responsible one.”
NLRPLS CEO and Chief Librarian Crystal Gates said The Hub’s mission remains important to the system.
“The Hub has always represented creativity, learning and opportunity. This transition does not change our belief in that mission,” Gates said. “Programs like Skills to Launch will continue beyond 2025, and we remain committed to supporting staff and offering innovative learning experiences for the community.”
NLRPLS also emphasized it “remains focused on delivering strong services across all locations, providing access, learning, and innovation for the North Little Rock community.” It will share additional updates as plans develop.
