A 19-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly shot at another man in Hillsborough, an incident that caused a local school district to go into lockdown.
Police were called to Route 206 near the Hillsborough Centre, a local shopping center, around 1 p.m. for a report of shots fired and were given descriptions of the alleged shooter and victim by eyewitnesses, according to a statement from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.
Both had fled the area before police arrived and as a precaution, detectives placed area schools in a lockdown and advised local residents and businesses to use caution, the office said.
The incident did not take place at any of the school buildings, according to a social media post from the school district.
Officers found the victim of the shooting, a 19-year-old Hillsborough man who was not injured, and also identified the shooter as Dawan Jeter, a fellow township resident, investigators said.
A search warrant was executed at Jeter’s home, but he was not there and shortly thereafter, authorities were alerted that he was on his way to police headquarters to surrender, officials said.
Jeter was taken into custody at the department at 5:56 p.m. and charged with first-degree attempted murder, third-degree endangering another person and two weapons-related offenses, the office said. He was taken to the Somerset County Jail, where he was held ahead of his detention hearing.
Anyone with more information about the incident was asked to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office at 908-231-7100 or the Hillsborough Township Police Department at 908-369-4313 or via the STOPit app.
