One person died in a house fire Sunday evening in a small Washington County town, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
When fire broke out just before 6 p.m. in Meddybemps, the local fire chief reported that there was a strong possibility the homeowner was still inside.
Firefighters arrived at 624 Main St. to find the house fully engulfed, with the fire spreading to a vehicle in the driveway, according to the fire marshal’s office. Crews from more than a half-dozen departments responded to fight the fire in heavy snow conditions.
After the fire was put out, a team of four state fire marshal investigators found the remains of an adult inside the house at 8:50 p.m., officials said.
The victim was taken to a funeral home, where a representative from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and confirm the person’s identity.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
Meddybemps, a small town near Maine’s eastern border with Canada, had a population of 139 as of the 2020 U.S. census.
