Man, 65, dies after hit-and-run collision in Waianae driveway

Honolulu police say a 65-year-old man has died after a hit-and-run collision that occurred in a private apartment complex driveway in Waianae.

Police said the incident occurred at about 5:10 p.m. on Nov. 7 within the extended private driveway of the Hale Wai Vista apartment complex. The man was on foot, according to police, crossing the driveway near Farrington Highway when he was allegedly struck by an unidentified motorist.

The motorist was making a right turn onto Farrington Highway, police said, and continued traveling westbound without stopping to render aid or provide information.

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

Police said the motorist remains at large and has not been identified. There was no crosswalk for pedestrians in the area of the collision. Police said speed did not appear to be a factor.

Police classified the case as Oahu’s first “non-traffic fatality” because it did not occur on a main public roadway, which can include parking lots and private driveways. It was Oahu’s first non-traffic fatality this year, compared to two at the same time last year.

An investigation is ongoing.
