A bicyclist died today after being struck by an SUV on Honoapiilani Highway in Lahaina, Maui police said.
Police said at about 5:46 a.m., a 52-year-old woman driving a Honda CR-V was headed north on the highway in the left inner lane past Fleming Road when she struck the bicyclist as he was turning left in front of her.
The bicyclist, a 48-year-old man from Lahaina, was ejected onto the road and sustained critical, life-threatening injuries, police said. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, wher he later died. His identity was not immediately released.
The driver, who is from Napili, was not injured and remained at the scene.
Police said the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet.
Speed does not appear to be a factor in the collision, but it is unknown whether alcohol or drugs contributed, said police, adding that their investigation is ongoing.

This was Maui County’s 13th traffic fatality this year, compared with 11 at the same time last year.
