At the franchise’s first home game as the Utah Mammoth, there was a new presence in the crowd riling up the fans.
“Tusky,” a 6-foot-5 mammoth mascot with light-blue fur, a dark-blue mohawk, and two white tusks, broke out of a faux ice block in the middle of the rink before the team’s home opener against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.
“We named the Utah Mammoth mascot Tusky to lean into our team’s ‘Tusks Up’ rallying cry,” Mammoth owners Ryan and Ashley Smith said in a statement. “Tusky is going to be a big part of our community, creating memorable experiences in and out of the arena. Fans can expect to see Tusky everywhere – from Mammoth games and team events to community gatherings, schools, and hospitals. We are excited for fans to get to know Tusky this season.”
In its inaugural season, and perhaps fitting with the generic Utah Hockey Club name, the Utah Jazz Bear was the team’s mascot — though at hockey games, he was called the “Hockey Bear.”
Now, though, Utah’s NHL team has a mascot of its own.
The team also revealed a new four-note goal horn, which sounded similar to a train’s horn.
Mammoth fans heard it three times on Wednesday, as Barrett Hayton, JJ Peterka and Kevin Stenlund all scored in a 3-1 victory over the Flames.
