Firefighters extinguish H-POWER conveyor belt fire

Honolulu firefighters extinguished a fire at the H-POWER facility in Kapolei this morning.

The Honolulu Fire Department responded to a 911 call at 10:55 a.m. for an activated fire alarm at 91-174 Hanua St. in Kapolei, which is the address for the H-POWER waste-to-energy facility at Campbell Industrial Park.

Upon arriving on scene at 11:04 a.m., firefighters saw smoke from a large, commercial building and requested additional resources. Eventually, seven units with about 23 personnel responded.

Firefighters secured a water supply, and launched an offensive attack on a small fire on a conveyor belt that moves rubbish from one area to another in the maintenance area.

The fire was brought under control at 12:21 p.m., and fully extinguished at 1:22 p.m.

No injuries were reported among HFD personnel.

An investigation is underway to determine fire’s origin and cause, along with the estimated damage.
