I was on top of the world when I won my 4th-grade spelling bee and moved on to compete with the rest of my school. The joy was short-lived, as I got out in the first round of the schoolwide competition.
The good news: On Thursday, October 23, an adult spelling bee is coming to Birmingham, and us elementary school champs can relive the glory days.

Rotaract Club of Birmingham develops young leaders
In case you haven’t heard: Rotaract Club of Birmingham is a young professional development organization, dedicated to inspiring its members to engage in building a better community and region.
Guided by leadership, service, fellowship, integrity and diversity, Rotaract is committed to developing young leaders across Birmingham.
They do this through social, learning and service opportunities. From a progressive dinner through James Beard Award Winning Restaurants and playing bingo with Ronald McDonald House residents, Rotaract brings unique and interactive opportunities for all members.
I’ve been a member of Rotaract since 2024 and can confirm that the community focus is unlike anything else I’ve participated in.

Everything Rotaract does, and every reason it was created, is centered around the city of Birmingham. Certain programs are dedicated to building their members in personal and professional development, while other programs allow members to engage in local junior boards and give back to Birmingham.

At the heart of the Rotaract Club of Birmingham are two Signature Service Projects: Ready2Succeed and Ready2Read.
- Ready2Succeed: College readiness, mentorship + scholarships for A.H. Parker High School students
- Ready2Read: Early literacy intervention for 2nd + 3rd graders at Minor Elementary, Hemphill Elementary and i3 Academy
Here’s the best part: All proceeds made at Sip N’ Spell—whether through ticket sales or sponsorships—go directly back to the Rotaract Club of Birmingham’s two Signature Service programs.
Last year, over $7,000 was raised for these programs. Rotaract aims to raise $12,500 this year—help make it happen!
