Man hit by truck on turnpike in Biddeford; police say he was running from them

An Ellsworth man who was running from police was hit by a truck when he crossed the Maine Turnpike Sunday night in Biddeford, according to police.

Maine State Police received a call around 8:30 p.m. from a West Virginia truck driver who reported he thought he had hit a deer, but saw that it was a person when he checked his in-truck camera.

Troopers found the 39-year-old man injured in a marshy area just before Exit 32, police said.

The man had serious injuries to his legs and head and was in the early stages of hypothermia when he was found, police said. He was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Police say the man had recently been caught stealing from cars near the Biddeford exit. He was running from Biddeford police when he decided to cross the turnpike to get away, police said.

The man had removed his court-ordered ankle monitor earlier in the day in Ellsworth, and the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office had issued a temporary arrest warrant for violating conditions of release, according to police.
