Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley was hospitalized early Friday morning after falling at his home, city officials confirmed.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. following an evening that Worley had been playing baseball. He was transported to a local hospital, where he is being treated for a broken nose and dehydration.
He is expected to remain under observation, Baltimore City police said in a press release.
Deputy Commissioner Brian Nadeau has been appointed Acting Commissioner while Worley recovers. Officials emphasized that police operations remain fully functional and that city leaders are in close contact with Worley’s family, according to police.
“We will provide updates as they become available and appreciate the community’s patience and support during this time,” the department said in a statement.
Worley, a 27-year veteran of the force, was nominated to lead the department by the City of Baltimore on June 8, 2023. He was confirmed on Oct, 2 and sworn in three days later. He first joined the department in 1998, beginning his career as a patrol officer in the Western District.
