AquaSox down Emeralds to capture Northwest League championship

Luis Suisbel hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning, and the Everett AquaSox never looked back in a 6-3 win over the visiting Eugene Emeralds to capture the best-of-five Northwest League championship series 3-1 on Saturday night.

Charlie Pagliarini and Tai Peete also homered, and relievers Gabriel Sosa, William Fleming, Ben Hernandez and Lucas Kelly combined to pitch five scoreless innings to seal the game.

The AquaSox reached the championship series by winning the season’s first-half title with a 37-29 record.

Everett struggled in the second half after a slew of promotions, however, finishing in last place at 23-43, 26 games behind Eugene.

• Leody Taveras homered and drove in three runs and the Tacoma Rainiers pounded out 19 hits in a 9-5 win over the host Salt Lake Bees.

Ben Williamson went 2 for 5 with two RBI, and Victor Labrada and Miles Mastrobuoni had three hits each for the Rainiers (82-61).

HOCKEY

• Third-period goals from Eduard Sale, Berkly Catton and Nathan Villeneuve turned a 3-1 deficit into a lead and the Seattle Kraken beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-3 in the NHL Prospects Game at Angel of the Winds Arena.

Jagger Firkus and Tyson Jugnauth had two assists each, and Ville Ottavainen added an empty-net goal late for the Kraken.

VOLLEYBALL

Mary Healy had 14 kills and six blocks, and Washington State dominated at the net en route to a 3-1 win over Seton Hall by scores of 23-25, 25-18, 25-21 and 25-15 at the Harvard Invitational in Cambridge, Mass.

Melina Christodoulou had 12 kills and four blocks, and Lucie Blazkova added nine kills and six block for the Cougars (5-3), who have won three straight.

• Seattle U dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to SIUE by scores of 20-25, 25-13, 25-18, 22-25 and 15-13 at the SIUE Cougar Classic in Edwardsville, Ill.

Adee Butler led the Redhawks (6-3) in kills and digs with 13 each, and Madyn Cervellera added 12 kills and 10 digs.

• Seattle Pacific (5-3) was swept by Concordia-Irvine 25-18, 25-21, 26-24 at the Nighthawks Classic in Nampa, Idaho.

SOCCER

Yeider Zuluaga had two goals and an assists as the Seattle U men cruised to a 4-0 win over host UC Davis for their first win of the season.

Ismael Yeo and Lars Thorne-Thomsen also scored for the Redhawks (1-3-2).

• The Seattle Pacific men (1-1-2) played to a scoreless draw with host Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Nora Patterson scored the lone goal for the Seattle Pacific women (1-1-1) on a late penalty kick in a 2-1 loss to host Regis.

CROSS COUNTRY

• Seattle Pacific’s Maya Ewing won the women’s 4K in a time of 13 minutes, 42.4 seconds at the season-opening Green River Invitational in Steilacoom.

Isaac Venable was the top finisher for the Seattle Pacific men, finishing the 6K in 21st place with a time of 15:53.3.

HYDROPLANES

J. Michael Kelly in the U-8 Beacon Electric and Andrew Tate in the U-91 Goodman Real Estate traded victories at San Diego Bayfair, while veteran Dave Villwock piloted the U-27 Miss Apollo to consistent podium finishes on Saturday.

Kelly, Tate, Villwock and Jamie Nilsen remain in a tight race for the championship Bill Muncey Cup, which will be awarded on Sunday.
