The family of Genna Spina, a 21-year-old Denville woman killed in a multi-vehicle crash in Union County, has organized a fundraiser for her funeral expenses.
Spina died last weekend after she was ejected from a car on Interstate 78 West near milepost 53.4 in Hillside, New Jersey State Police said.
A Honda SUV traveling west changed lanes and struck a Toyota SUV, authorities said. A Ford passenger car carrying Spina, who was a passenger, then struck the Honda, causing the Ford to overturn before it was struck by a Chevrolet.
Spina sustained fatal injuries in the crash while the driver of the Toyota and the Chevrolet both suffered moderate injuries, police said.
The driver of the Ford had serious injuries and two passengers in the Chevrolet, including an 11-year-old juvenile, had minor injuries, investigators said.
A GoFundMe, created by Caitlin Scanlon on behalf of Spina’s family, had raised more than $30,000 toward a $35,000 goal as of Friday afternoon.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden and tragic loss of our beloved and cherished Genna, a sweet daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, dear friend, and cat mom,” Scanlon wrote on the fundraiser page. “At just 21 years young, Genna was taken far too soon as an innocent passenger in a car accident.”
A service will be held for Spina on Sept. 19, according to the GoFundMe page.
