It may still be warm and sunny out, but the fall season is nipping at our heels. This week’s entertainment includes both indoor and outdoor events and a chance to kick off the season of harvest festivals with both the Apple Jam and an Oktoberfest on the list. We’ve also got an art walk and several theater openings this week.
“The Cake”
Triangle Productions presents the Oregon premier of a play about a happy Christian cake baker who must examine her beliefs when she realizes her friend has asked her to create one of her masterpieces for a lesbian wedding. Normally she’d leave these sorts of decisions to her husband. What will she do now? Don Horn directs.

Rose City Comic Con
This fall season Portland favorite offers an ever-expanding guest list of dozens of top level animators, movie and television stars, comic book artists, novelists and much more. Current guests scheduled to appear include Corey Feldman (let’s go “Goonies” fans!), David Harbour of “Stranger Things,” Wil Wheaton, Parker Posey and Sean Astin. Cosplay with other fans, listen to panel discussions, get your comic books signed, or just take in the scene during this three-day must do event.

“Worry Dolls”
Milagro Theatre presents a play written by Maya Malan-Gonzalez about two middle school best friends who tell each other “everything” and help each other navigate the trauma and grief experienced during and after the COVID pandemic. The play is suitable for ages 7 and older.

Come Together – A Burlesque Tribute to The Beatles

First Friday Irish Music and Dance
Tualatin’s Winona Grange hosts this season’s Ceili kickoff party with live music and dancing by Biddy on the Bench. Ages 12 and older are welcome to learn traditional Irish dancing or brush up on their skills.

First Friday Art Walk (Salem)

GRO Parade of Homes
The Building Industry Association of Clark County presents a showcase of the latest in home architecture, design, and construction at The Nines in Camas Meadows. William Shakespeare’s “Pericles”
Speculative Drama and Misfit Academy take over the Portland Center Stage lobby for an interactive performance that brings together the vaulting ceilings and balconies of the PCS Armory’s two-story lobby with stylized puppetry and paper-craft props. Audience members travel with the performers as King Pericles journeys through the seven seas in search of love and fortune.

Metro’s Apple Jam
Harvest time is upon us, and you’ll see plenty of events celebrating the region’s bounty in the next few weeks. Metro’s Apple Jam is a family-friendly event held in a historic Sauvie Island orchard. Learn about apple harvesting, play games, see a cider press in action and see how you can reduce food waste.

Annual Willamette Chalk Walk
Head to West Linn this weekend for a vibrant celebration of art, creativity and culture in downtown. Artists of all ages and skill levels get a chunk of sidewalk to call their own and create dynamic artworks for visitors to see. Expect color and creativity with a festive atmosphere. Prizes will be awarded in age categories. There is a fee to participate, but the event is free for spectators.

Follow the Thread: The Fabric of the Hellenic Spirit
Hellenic-American Cultural Center and Museum hosts a showcase of Greek folk art and textile work from the 17th Century to modern times. See examples of embroidery, weaving, clothing, tapestries and more that have been loaned by members of Portland’s Hellenic community.

Timeless Recital Series
Evren Ozel brings his narrative-driven approach to the piano to Portland State University as a guest of Portland Piano International on his first visit to Portland. The program includes work by Ludwig van Beethoven, Domenico Scarlatti, Bartok and Robert Schumann. See this rising star who was a recent Bronze Medalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

The City of Vancouver Patriot Day
The City of Vancouver has partnered with Community Military Appreciation Committee, the Vancouver Police Department and the Vancouver Fire Department to host the 9/11 Patriot Day Ceremony that honors and remembers the heroes who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. Expect remarks from area officials, a Moment of Silence, dove release, and a wreath laying ceremony.

Mount Angel Oktoberfest
The first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 in Munich, Germany, but you can get a taste of what that original wedding festival was like right here in Oregon. Mount Angel held its first Oktoberfest in 1966 and continues to provide a true Bavarian-style event with German music, dancing, food, beer and a real community spirit. Locals go on Thursday to avoid the crowds. This popular festival often draws 300,000 guests a year to the tiny Willamette Valley town south of Woodburn.
