Unattended candle sparks Ewa Beach house fire

Honolulu firefighters put out a fire at a two-story, family home in Ewa Beach overnight.

The Honolulu Fire Department determined that the fire was caused by an unattended candle and has classified the cause as accidental. No injuries were reported.

HFD received a 911 call at 12:18 a.m. for a house fire on the 91-1000 block of Karayan Street in Ewa Beach. Ten units with 35 personnel responded, with the first arriving on scene seven minutes later.

Firefighters found smoke coming from the second floor of the family home and began an aggressive fire attack.

The fire was brought under control at 12:29 a.m. and extinguished at 12:38 a.m. No occupants were in the home at the time of the fire.

The Red Cross was requested to assist the displaced occupants.

Estimated damages are at $180,000 to both the structure and its contents.

HFD advises blowing out all candles upon leaving the room or going to bed, and keeping candles at least 1 foot away from anything that can burn.

“Think about using flameless candles in your home,” said HFD.
