Newton police break up gathering of ‘over 100 cars’ street racing

Newton police broke up a gaggle of more than 100 street racers just after midnight Aug. 3, the department said. 

Police arrived in Newton Centre after receiving a report of over 100 cars “driving erratically” and “burning tires,” police said Thursday on Facebook. 

Officers were able to halt and cite some of the drivers, but several sped away from the area, the department said. 

“Although this does not happen often in our area, this driving behavior is dangerous!” Newton police said.  

WBZ-TV’s helicopter captured skid marks from the race that still linger on Beacon Street and Centre Street days after, the station reported. 

The incident comes a year after dozens of cars roared through Bay Bay racing and doing donuts in April 2024.

In response, City Councilor Ed Flynn penned a letter to Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox urging police to “thoroughly investigate” the incident and to take action.

Newton police did not immediately respond for a comment.
