President Donald Trump weighed in on Sydney Sweeney’s controversial American Eagle jeans ad Monday while bashing “woke singer” Taylor Swift in a Truth Social post Monday.
Misspelling Sweeney’s name twice, Trump pointed out that the “White Lotus” actress is a “registered Republican” while voicing his support for her controversial American Eagle ad that plays on the words “jeans” and “genes.”
“Sidney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the HOTTEST ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying of the shelves.’ Go get ‘em Sidney,” Trump posted.
Florida Department of State records show Sweeney, who owns a home in the Florida Keys, registered as a Republican on June 14, 2024.
American Eagle and Sweeney are taking heat for the ad from liberal activists that sparked a debate over race and Western beauty standards.
The ad featured the tagline “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”
Most of the negative reception focused on videos that used the word “genes” instead of “jeans” when discussing the blonde-haired, blue-eyed actor known for the HBO series “Euphoria” and “White Lotus.”
Critics found the most troubling was a teaser video in which Sweeney says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.”
The video appeared on American Eagle’s Facebook page and other social media channels but is not part of the ad campaign.
Some critics saw the wordplay as a nod, either unintentional or deliberate, to eugenics, a discredited theory that held humanity could be improved through selective breeding for certain traits.
While Trump’s Truth Social post applauded the ad, it condemned British automaker Jaguar’s “seriously woke” ad from last year that used androgynous models and was
“On the other side of the ledger, Jaguar did a stupid, and seriously WOKE, advertisement, THAT IS A DISASTER. The CEO just resigned, the company is in turmoil. Shouldn’t they have learned a lesson from Bud Lite, which went Woke and essentially destroyed, in a short but very Woke campaign, the Company. The market cap destruction has been unprecedented, BILLIONS OF DOLLARS LOST,” Trump wrote.
The president also claimed he destroyed Swift’s popularity when he posted to Truth Social in May that the megastar was “no longer hot.”
“Or just look at Woke singer Taylor Swift. Ever since I alerted the world as to what she was by saying on TRUTH that I can’t stand her,” he wrote.
