There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii after a large 6.8 magnitude earthquake tonight off Russia in the same area of Tuesday’s 8.8 magnitude quake that generated a Pacific-wide tsunami, officials said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on Oahu said there was no threat to Hawaii from tonight’s temblor, and the National Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska said there was no threat in other regions.
Tonight’s quake struck at about 7:38 p.m. Hawaii time off the Kuril Islands. The PTWC initially said the magnitude was 7.0, but the U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at 6.8 magnitude.
On Tuesday, the 8.8 quake was among the top six strongest magnitudes ever recorded and led to widespread evacuations in Hawaii and across the Pacific, but no major damage was reported beyond Russian areas close to the epicenter.
