Although Portland offers a rich variety of cultural festivals, some observances still fly under the radar — such as South Asian Heritage Month, which runs from July 18 to Aug. 17. Originating in the United Kingdom in 2020, the month highlights the cultures and histories of countries such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and the Maldives.
While not formally recognized in the United States, South Asian communities in Oregon have taken the lead in celebrating their heritage through grassroots efforts. In Washington County, home to more than 23,000 South Asian residents, community-led efforts have helped showcase the region’s cultural richness through events like the annual India Festival, featuring music, dance, food and storytelling.
This season, there are several opportunities to engage with South Asian culture throughout Oregon. From August through October, here are four events worth marking on your calendar.
SKN Dance Fest 2025
Now in its eighth year, SKN Dance Fest returns to New Expressive Works for a daylong celebration of Indian classical arts. Hosted by Sarada Kala Nilayam, a Beaverton-based, woman- and minority-owned dance and music organization, the event features two live performances showcasing Bharatanatyam dance and its rhythmic counterpart, Nattuvangam, accompanied by a full orchestra.
This year’s festival includes original choreography, a cast of 20 local artists and immersive community workshops led by Sri S. Ravisankar. Outside the theater, visitors can enjoy food, henna and handmade goods from local vendors.

TIRANGA: India Independence Party
Celebrate 78 years of India’s independence with a high-energy, late-night dance party led by DJ Prashant, founder of Jai Ho! Dance Party. Known for blending Bollywood hits, regional anthems and interactive dance lessons, this Portland tradition invites attendees to dress in orange, white, green or blue and hit the floor for a night of Desi pride.
Expect vibrant visuals, henna art, live performances and professional photography. The event is 21+ and known to sell out. Tickets are available for purchase on eventbrite.

India Festival 2025
After a brief relocation to Beaverton City Park in 2024, India Festival is moving back downtown to Pioneer Square, the festival’s venue since 1994. Now in its 31th year, this vibrant event hosted by the India Cultural Association of Portland celebrates India’s Independence Day with thousands of attendees and dozens of vendors.
Expect live music, classical and traditional Indian dance, South Asian street food and a vendor market. Attendees are encouraged to bring sun protection, water and their enthusiasm.

Durga Puja 2025
Prabashi Portland marks its 27th annual Durga Puja with two days of worship, community gatherings and live music. This year’s celebration will feature back-to-back concerts by female vocalists. Indian classical and fusion singer Madhubanti Bagchi is set to perform on the evening of Oct. 3, with soulful retropop artist Anwesha Datta Gupta headlining the night of Oct. 4.
