Earlier in July, Artspace opened its “Find Your Glimmer” black-light installation featuring work from North Carolina artist Candy Carver. Now, to mark the installation’s closing, the gallery encourages attendees to put on their most neon outfit and crash “the best art party of the summer.”
In her artist statement, Carver describes “Find Your Glimmer” as “taking people inside of my heart and my head and leaving them there to play.” If you’re feeling like you could use a little more playfulness this week, you might enjoy spending your Saturday night exploring vibrant art, crafting DIY glimmer jewelry, and listening to music from DJ MAXSUNLOVE at the event. The description for Arin Dickson’s new theater company, Scapegoat Initiative, feels very Durham and very of-the-moment: “Challenging perspectives through theatre. Driving social, political, and environmental change through community engagement.”
Scapegoat makes its daring debut this summer with Jane Martin’s 1994 Pulitzer-nominated play Keely & Du, a performance that also feels of the moment: The abortion drama follows Keely, a rape victim held captive in the suburbs, and Du, the fundamentalist woman assigned by the extremist anti-abortion cult that has kidnapped Keely, to keep watch over her. The production is directed by Durham’s Dustin Britt and is recommended for audiences 18 and up. If you can’t make it this weekend, the pay-what-you-can production will also be staged on July 31 and August 1. –Sarah Edwards
Também consists of three local artists—Ingrid Knight, Gastón Reggio, and Andy Powell—coming together to create what the group’s website describes as “eclectic, groove-driven music.” In the past seven years, the band has released two studio albums that unite Brazilian and American music traditions under one rich sound.
You can hear their songs live at NC State University’s Gregg Museum of Art & Design, where Também will perform as part of the Gregg’s free summer music series. The show starts at 7, but the museum (also free) is open until 5 p.m. Get there early to explore the museum’s collection, grab a bite to eat in downtown Raleigh, and settle down on your picnic blanket to enjoy the show. —DK
Billed as live storytelling in the vein of NPR’s Moth Radio Hour, this Rialto-presented event features community members—from educators to parents to soccer coaches—with some things to get off their chest. Specifically, 5-8 minute stories about children and the power of advocating for them in a world that often puts children last.
Examples of these in the event description include “a mom wanting a strong public school system for her child, a teacher finding the courage to speak out in political spaces, politicians pledging to put children at the front of their political agenda, a pediatrician’s determination to change the public health system for children, a coach who believes that sports can change the trajectory of youths lives.” Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. show and tickets start at $11. –SE
Mo Amer shares more than a first name with Mo, his hit Netflix comedy-drama that he created with Ramy Youssef: Like the character he plays on the show, the comedian and actor is a refugee from Palestine who grew up in Houston and navigated cross-cultural hurdles.
In interviews, Amer has spoken about the lack of representation of Palestinians in Hollywood, a gap that surely applies to the representation of Palestinians in the comedy world, as well. On this global tour—which was previously scheduled for a stop in Durham earlier this year and postponed, to the disappointment of many!—Amer has no shortage of material, with a set that touches on “life, family, and his journey as a new dad in today’s political climate.” This show is a “phone-free” experience and is for ages 18+ —SE
