Brushfire in Wailuku extinguished, cause and burnt acreage unknown

UPDATE 6 p.m.

The Maui Emergency Management Agency said in an update Sunday evening that firefighters fully extinguished the Wailuku fire at 5:21 p.m.

Officials thanked the public for their cooperation and understanding throughout the day.

The Maui Fire Department contained a brush fire in Wailuku Sunday off of Piihana Road.

It’s currently unclear how many acres the fire burned and the cause of the fire.

The Maui Emergency Management Agency said in Genasys advisory that a brush fire in the area off of Piihana Road had been reported at around 1:50 p.m.

MFD was on the scene and the Maui Police Department controlled traffic in the area.

MEMA released another alert at 4:15 p.m. saying that the brush fire was contained at 3:54 p.m.

Officials urged the public to continue to avoid the area to allow emergency crews to operate.
