Cooling centers across Baltimore City offer refuge from incoming heat wave

Cooling centers across Baltimore City will be open to residents looking to escape the severe heat headed for the region in the coming week.

With the National Weather Service issuing an extreme heat advisory for Monday and the Baltimore City Health Department’s announcement of a “Code Red” extreme heat alert from Sunday to Thursday in anticipation of temperatures surpassing 100 degrees next week, residents are encouraged to visit cooling centers offering air-conditioning, cold water and free Wi-Fi.

These include five cooling centers operated by the Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services as part of the office’s “Code Red” extreme heat alert plan offering free Wi-Fi to those who visit:

  • My Sisters Place Women’s Center at 17 W. Franklin St. will be open to women and children only, every day from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Manna House at 435 E. 25th St. will open from Monday to Friday between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Franciscan Center at 101 W. 23rd St. will be open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Housing Authority of Baltimore City will also be operating two cooling centers on “Code Red” alert days from Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Brooklyn Homes at 4140 10th St., and Cherry Hill Homes at 2700 Spelman Road. These centers will also offer free Wi-Fi.

  • Oliver Senior Center at 1700 Gay St.
  • Sandtown Winchester Senior Center at 1601 Baker St.

The city health department also encouraged residents seeking cool shelter to visit open locations of the Enoch Pratt Free Library across Baltimore — though the department specified that the libraries will not provide free bottled water.

For cold water, residents can visit several locations operated by the Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services for those experiencing unsheltered homelessness:
