19-year-old charged in fatal N.J. shooting, sought by cops

A 19-year-old from Bridgeton was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 20-year-old Millville native, authorities announced Thursday.

Trasuf J. Bennett was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, according to the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office.

Bennett remains at large and should be considered “armed and dangerous,” police said.

According to authorities, Bennett allegedly pulled up in a vehicle and shot the victim, 20-year-old Roshaud Rhett of Millville, on June 14 in the 300 block of Maurice Street in the city.

Additional details on the shooting were not released.

Following the shooting, Rhett was taken to Inspira Medical Center in Vineland where he was pronounced dead. The investigation remains ongoing.

In addition to charges against Bennett, 19-year-old James L. Henry of Millville was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose after allegedly returning gunfire at Bennett during the incident.

Henry also remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.

Police are also attempting to find Alijah Cruz, 16, who is believed to have been in the vehicle with Bennett last weekend. Cruz, referred to as a runaway, “may be considered vulnerable at this time,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
