Alabama is looking at two chances for severe storms in the coming days.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a Level 2 out of 5 risk for the state on Friday and Saturday.
Additional storms will be possible on Sunday and into next week, but so far organized severe weather is not in the forecast.
On Friday areas from roughly Birmingham northward to the Tennessee state line will have a Level 2 out of 5 (slight) risk for severe weather.
A Level 2 risk means scattered severe storms will be possible. The strongest of those could have wind gusts as high as 60 mph, which could take down trees and power lines. There is also the possibility of some hail and heavy rain. The tornado risk is low but not zero.
Storms will be most likely from Friday afternoon into the evening hours.
The National Weather Service also said that there’s a chance a second round of storms could affect the state during the overnight hours.
On Saturday there will be another Level 2 risk, and it has been expanded to cover the northern two-thirds of the state, or from Troy and Greenville northward to the Tennessee state line.
Here is the outlook for Saturday:
All of Alabama from Troy and Greenville northward will have a Level 2 risk for severe weather on Saturday. A Level 1 risk will cover the rest of south Alabama except for coastal areas.SPC
The timing for potential storms on Saturday is less certain, but forecasters think the most likely time will again be during the afternoon and evening hours.
On Saturday the strongest storms could again have damaging winds and heavy rain.
The weather service said additional storms will be possible Sunday and Monday, which could lead to localized flooding, but so far no severe weather risk has been added to the forecast for Alabama.
