Craig Breslow confident in Alex Cora, Red Sox coaching staff

Alex Cora has not been immune to the online criticism with the 2025 Red Sox. But Craig Breslow isn’t among those questioning his leadership amid Boston’s unexpected struggles.

Speaking to the media prior to Saturday’s loss in Atlanta, Breslow reiterated his confidence in Cora, who signed a 3-year extension to remain the Red Sox manager through 2027.

“Yeah, we have a lot of confidence in Alex’s ability to lead this group, and that doesn’t mean that we don’t have conversations every day about what we might be missing or what more we can do,” Breslow said. “We obviously made a commitment to Alex, we’re going to see that through. Right now it’s about making sure that we’re doing everything we can to enable the 26 guys on our roster to help us win as many games as possible.”

In 2024, Cora entered the season in the last year of his contract. He brought a team that seemed dead in the water before ever playing a game near playoff contention before a meltdown post-All-Star break.

This season has been quite the opposite. Boston entered the year with high expectations for the first time in years, but sits four games under .500 heading into June. So it stands to reason that every aspect of the Red Sox would come into question, including the coaching staff.

Breslow didn’t just give his vote of confidence to Cora, though. He also threw support at the rest of Boston’s coaches, to a lesser extent.

“You know, I think it’s easy to point to that and say ‘hey, maybe we need to do something to shake things up or rattle the cage a little bit.’ I’m very mindful of not making a decision irresponsibly or hastily,” Breslow said. “But again, I think at this point we have to question everything we’re doing — I question the work that I’m doing as well.

“We’re all in this together, I think the solution is going to come from the group that we have.”

No matter how much confidence Breslow has in his group, things haven’t gone Boston’s way over two months into the 2025 season. The Red Sox are in desperate need of a turnaround, and Breslow went in-depth about the issues plaguing the team.

“The simple answer is it’s not good enough. It’s not the performance we expected in the offseason,” Breslow said. “I think we can point to a number of things that haven’t really been able to sync up offense and defense, we’ve been sloppy in the field at times, we’ve run into mistakes on the bases. And we’re going to have to play clean baseball, we’re going to have to start getting hits and making big pitches if we want to rattle off the wins that we need.

“And if we believe at the end of the day that we have the right processes in place and our guys are doing the right work, then baseball’s the type of sport that will let it play out. But it’s too late in the season and the evidence is too strong to just say we’re going to be OK tomorrow when we wake up.”

So the Red Sox will wake up on June 1 sitting at 28-32, having lost six of their last seven games. They know a solution won’t fall from the sky. But they believe a solution lies somewhere in front of them. And they’ll need to find it sooner rather than later.
