Lionsbridge wins on road, stays unbeaten
Lionsbridge (4-0-1) won 3-1 against USL League Two rival Christos United on a cold, rainy night in Baltimore.
Constantinos Christou had a goal and an assist as the Lions improved to 3-0-1 in the Chesapeake Division. They lead the division with 10 points.
After the Lions failed to score on a penalty kick in the first half, Gabi Rodriguez followed a goalkeeper’s deflection and put Lionsbridge ahead 1-0 in the 53rd minute.
About four minutes later, the Lions doubled the lead as Damean Dominguez headed in a Christou pass.
The hosts’ Logan Oliver scored in the 66th minute to pull to 2-1, but Christou’s goal in the 78th minute re-established the Lions’ command.
Christos fell to 0-3 in the division.
Virginia Beach United ties
Virginia Beach United and Northern Virginia FC played to a scoreless draw at Virginia Beach Sportsplex, leaving both clubs with one win, no losses and two ties in the Chesapeake Division. The visitors received two yellow cards to VBU’s none.
COLLEGE HONORS
UVA athlete finalist for Inspiration Award
Virginia track athlete Marlee Morgan was named one of three finalists for the Honda Inspiration Award, as announced by Chris Voelz, executive director of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards.
The other finalists include Nordic skier Sidney Barbier of Denver and softball player Katie Cosmos of Elms College.
The award has been selected annually for the past 37 years and is given to a female student-athlete in Division I, II or III who has experienced extraordinary physical and/or emotional adversity, injury and/or illness, or experienced extraordinary personal sacrifice during her college enrollment as a student-athlete and yet returns to athletic success.
A CBS Sports Network feature, “Defying the Odds: The 2025 Honda Inspiration Award,” will run at 6 p.m. June 23, highlighting the journeys of all three finalists.
Morgan was a victim of the bus shooting Nov. 13, 2022, that killed three UVA football players. She was doing workouts with the track team around the time her leg was severely injured in the shooting, though she was only a manager at the time. She eventually recovered and became fast enough to make the team.
