Chase Meidroth recorded his first hit and drew three walks against his former organization Friday.
The first prospect dealt to the White Sox from the Red Sox in last year’s Garrett Crochet trade has reached the majors.
Infielder Chase Meidroth was promoted to Chicago on Friday and promptly made his MLB debut, coincidentally against Boston, his former organization, the same day. The White Sox’ No. 8 ranked prospect batted seventh and played second base.
More notably, Meidroth reached base in all four of his plate appearances. He drew three walks, including a four-pitch walk in his first PA in the second inning. Meidroth’s first hit came against starting pitcher Sean Newcomb in the fourth inning, a ground ball through the right side.
He scored twice in Chicago’s 11-1 blowout win over the Red Sox.
Meidroth was included in a blockbuster trade package with catcher Kyle Teel (White Sox’ No. 2 prospect), outfielder Braden Montgomery (No. 5), and right-handed pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez (No. 18) in exchange for Crochet in December.
Meidroth spoke to the media about his memorable first big-league game.
“I had a lot of fun,” he said (via MLB.com’s Scott Merkin). “It was good that we won. It was a lot of fun.”
Meidroth, the 129th draft pick by the Red Sox in 2022, was asked how he feels about being known as a player who walks a lot, following his three-walk contest.
“I think it’s great,” he said. “I’m not exactly looking at how much I walk. I’m just trying to win as many pitches as I can in a game.”
In 122 games with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox last year, Meidroth drew 105 walks. He walked eight times in nine games with the Charlotte Knights prior to getting called up.
Meidroth’s Triple-A manager Sergio Santos broke the news that he was heading to the majors in a heartwarming video posted by the White Sox on X. The player asked if he was being cut during the one-on-one conversation.
SANTOS: “Have a seat, bro.”
MEIDROTH: “Am I cut?”
SS: “Huh?”
CM: “Are you cutting me?”
SS: “Yeah, I am. No, dude. Just honestly wanted to preface this with, you’re an absolute manager’s dream, dude. The consistency on the field knowing when I plug you in what I’m gonna get, is (expletive) rare and it’s awesome from my end. But even off the field, you’re the same guy every single day. And so for me, this is one of the coolest days in the world because to be able to tell you that you’re gonna be a (expletive) Major League Baseball player. And you’re going up to the (expletive) show.”
CM: “Right now?”
SS: “You did it, yeah.”
CM: “Wow.”
SS: “You absolutely deserve it. You’re an incredible young man. I’m gonna get emotional saying it, but … I care about you a lot and you freaking deserve it, man.”
Boston manager Alex Cora feels similarly about Meidroth. He praised the infielder pregame Friday.
“They got some players over there,” Cora said (via MassLive’s Chris Cotillo). “It starts tonight with Chase. People are gonna fall in love with that kid. He’s a really good player.”
