Alex Ovechkin broke former Kings star Wayne Gretzky’s NHL goals record by scoring the 895th of his career on Sunday during a match against the New York Islanders.
Play stopped after Oveckin scored in the second period as the crowd chanted “Ovi, Ovi” and the Russian star shook hands with all players on the ice. Gretzky, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and Ovechkin’s family made their way to the ice as he was honored for the milestone.
Ovechkin’s Capitals trailed the Islanders 2-1 when play was interrupted to mark the historic moment.
