Tides toss combined 3-hitter, hand Knights their first loss – The Virginian-Pilot

Cameron Weston made an impressive Triple-A debut, combining with three relievers on a three-hitter as the Norfolk Tides defeated the Charlotte Knights 3-1 on Wednesday night in North Carolina.

It was the first road win of the season for the Tides (2-3), who handed the first-place Knights (4-1) their first defeat.

Weston made one mistake, allowing Chase Meidroth’s solo home run in the first inning. He didn’t allow another hit and struck out six straight batters at one point. He went four innings, allowing the lone run and hit.

Justin Armbruester (1-0) replaced Weston and pitched two scoreless innings for the victory. Luis González pitched a scoreless seventh and Rodolfo Martinez fanned five in two hitless innings to earn his first save of the season.

Charlotte starter Owen White allowed one run on two hits in 4.2 innings.

Norfolk tied it at 1 in the third inning on Jordyn Adams’ sacrifice fly, which scored Maverick Handley.

Rain delayed the game for 52 minutes in the sixth inning.

When it resumed, Luis Vázquez’s RBI single in the seventh put the Tides ahead to stay at 2-1 and Vimael Machín scored on a throwing error by pitcher Justin Anderson on a pickoff attempt in the ninth.

Daz Cameron went 2 for 3 with a run and was the lone Tides batter with multiple hits.

Gunnar Henderson went 0 for 3 in what could be the final game of his rehab assignment with Norfolk. He is eligible to come off the major league injured list Thursday. He hit .263 with two homers and four RBIs in five games with the Tides.

The two teams will continue their six-game series at 7:04 p.m. Thursday.
