A Holmdel man is facing several charges after attempting to remove a Pride flag from a local Matawan business, according to police.
The incident occurred at 11:45 a.m. Saturday outside Main Street Donuts, Matawan police said in a press release on Facebook.
The owner spoke to police and said the man, identified Sunday as 61-year-old Maciej Wojciak, tried to remove the pride flag from the front of the store, according to the release.
The owner then attempted to stop Wojciak, who fled the scene before police arrived, authorities said.
While officers were searching for Wojciak, he returned to the business. He then made a Nazi salute and performed simulated sexual acts in the roadway, police said.
During the incident, the man also threatened to burn down the donut shop, authorities said.
Officers located Wojciak’s vehicle and arrested him, police said. He was taken to Monmouth County Correctional Institution in Freehold and charged with bias intimidation, terroristic threats, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct, the department said.
After hearing about the incident, some customers went to the business as a show of support. There was a line out the door much of the day and the shop was sold out of donuts by 11:30 a.m., local resident said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Adam Hess at 800-533-7443 or Matawan Police Department Detective Mason Sheehan at 732-290-2038.
