William & Mary (6-15) scored five runs in the first inning Wednesday night and made them stand up, holding on for a 10-8 victory over Old Dominion (5-13) before 242 at Plumeri Park.
The Tribe built a 7-1 lead through four innings. ODU scored twice in the sixth and seventh to pull to 10-8, but the Monarchs went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings against Zach Boyd, who pitched 2 2/3 hitless innings for a save.
Daniel Lingle got one out for the victory. ODU starter Nick Sulpizio, who gave up hits to six of the seven batters to face him, took the defeat.
W&M’s Kevin Francella drove in three runs, Jamie Laskofski scored three, Derek Holmes was 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs, and Lucas Carmichael was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.
ODU’s Zach Leite blasted the game’s only home run. He was 3 for 5 with two runs and four RBIs. Teammate Luke Waters added two RBIs.
Richmond 6, No. 23 Virginia 2: The Spiders (19-2) won in Charlottesville, their 12th consecutive victory. The loss snapped UVA’s 31-game home midweek win streak that dated back to an April loss to ODU in 2022.
UR’s only losses have come to Fairfield, a series in which second-year coach Mik Aoki’s Spiders won two of three, and to Penn State.
Winner Gerry Peacock pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up two hits and a run while striking out five. Bradley Hodges incurred the loss, giving up three runs, three hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings.
Trevor Dosenbach and Jordan Jaffe each hit two-run doubles during UR’s four-run second inning, and Michael Elko scored on Cole Palmeri’s groundout in the third. DJ Pacheco’s homer in the fifth gave the Spiders a 6-0 lead.
Randolph-Macon 5, Virginia Wesleyan 2: The Yellow Jackets’ pitching prevailed in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game, though Brandon Drewry had two of the Marlins’ seven hits. One was an RBI triple in the seventh.
Winner William Wian (2-1), a First Colonial High graduate, pitched six shutout innings for Randolph-Macon (9-6, 5-2 ODAC). Nick Beatty (0-1) took the loss for VWU (4-8, 0-5).
Apprentice 2, Montgomery College-Rockville 1: Playing their first game of a trip to the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the Builders (12-5) prevailed behind the complete-game pitching of Charley Higginbotham. He pitched all seven innings, giving up nine hits and a second-inning run. He struck out three and walked one.
In the Apprentice third, Jeremy Harmon singled home Camden Weston before Landon Turner singled home Camden Richardson. Turner had two of the Builders’ five hits.
Garrett 5, Apprentice 2: Later at the Ripken Experience, Apprentice (12-5) lost to the Lakers (12-2) of McHenry, Maryland, who have won four games in a row. Garrett broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run sixth, including Bryce Madden’s two-run double, to deal Zander Mizelle a loss.
Harmon and Caleb Russell had Apprentice’s RBI hits, and Jett Winslow was 2 for 3.
Apprentice was coming off a 2-0, 10-9 doubleheader defeat to Saint Vincent on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium. The Builders led that nightcap 9-5 after five innings behind three hits apiece from Winslow, Harmon and Hunter Johnson. Weston and Winslow scored twice each that day.
