Stefon Diggs reportedly leaves visit with Patriots without a deal

The Patriots will need to play the waiting game when it comes to star wide receiver Stefon Diggs. 

Diggs reportedly visited the Patriots Wednesday and Thursday as the 31-year-old receiver assesses his options as a free agent. But that meeting in Foxborough reportedly didn’t lead to Diggs putting pen to paper on any deal with New England. 

The Patriots’ visit with WR Stefon Diggs has ended, and while there is no deal in place as of now, both sides intend to remain in contact,” Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz posted on X. “As it was described to me, this was more of a “get to know you” and “where you’re at medically” type of meeting.”

Diggs’ health and age will impact his next contract, as he suffered a torn ACL in October with the Houston Texans. As a result, he may not be available for stretches of training camp this summer — and it remains to be seen when he’d get the green light for game action. 

But even with the questions regarding Diggs’ effectiveness and which type of receiver he is at this stage of his career, he’d provide an instant upgrade to New England’s subpar wide-receiver corps. 

MassLive’s Karen Guregian and Mark Daniels reported that Diggs’ meeting with the Patriots “went well,” with the veteran wideout undergoing testing to assess the state of his surgically repaired knee. 

A source told both Guregian and Daniels that there is “nothing imminent” on a contract between Diggs and the Patriots. 

Diggs has established himself as one of the top wideouts in the NFL over the last few seasons, posting six consecutive 1,000-yard seasons before last year’s injury. In the eight games he appeared in with Houston last season before hurting his knee, Diggs recorded 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns.

Despite some of the red flags with Diggs when it comes to his health, he’d immediately be Drake Maye’s top target for the 2025 season if he signs with New England.

New England has not had a wide receiver surpass 1,000 yards in a single season since Julian Edelman in 2019, with DeMario Douglas leading all Patriots receivers in 2024 with 66 catches and 621 receiving yards.

The Patriots are desperate to add a proven playmaker for Maye, with the team already unable to acquire offseason targets like DK Metcalf, Cooper Kupp, Deebo Samuel, and Chris Godwin this spring via trade or free agency.
