Old Dominion upends No. 22 Southern Mississippi in baseball – The Virginian-Pilot

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Blake Morgan shut out No. 22 Southern Mississippi for seven innings, and Old Dominion (5-12, 1-2) captured its first Sun Belt victory of the season with a 4-1 win Sunday in Hattiesburg.

Morgan frustrated the Golden Eagles (14-6, 2-1 Sun Belt) all afternoon, retiring the side in order in the first, second, fourth and seventh innings. ODU’s Tyler Zedalis (3 for 4) was a double shy of hitting for the cycle, and Kyle Edwards (3 for 5) doubled and scored a run. TJ Aiken drove in two runs for the Monarchs.

In other college baseball Sunday:

No. 23 Virginia 11, California 5: Henry Godbout launched a grand slam in a nine-run second inning as the Cavaliers (12-6, 3-3 ACC) won the deciding contest in a three-game series against the Bears (9-10, 2-4) in Berkeley.

Aidan Teel and Chone James each went 2 for 4 with a run driven in. Pitcher Evan Blanco picked up his first win of the season after surrendering two earned runs and striking out four in five innings.

Stonehill 23, Norfolk State 8: The Skyhawks (4-11, 3-0 Northeast Conference) swept the host Spartans (0-16, 0-6) in a three-game series.

Jalan Jones, Justin Journette, Collin Curry and Cam Mazell slugged home runs for the Spartans. The Skyhawks hit three homers among their 15 hits, with Sam Parks driving in five runs and Aidan Cohall knocking in four.

East Carolina 19-9, William & Mary 6-8: ECU (12-8) swept a Sunday doubleheader to sweep a three-game series. The Tribe fell to 5-15. The Pirates’ Colby Wallace had a huge day at the plate, batting 4 for 8 with four runs and nine RBIs over the doubleheader.

In Game 2, Ben Parker doubled twice and drove in three runs, and Lucas Carmichael and Christian Rush had two RBIs each.

Oswego State 13, Virginia Wesleyan 2: VWU decisively lost at home, though John Bastiaans and Noah Burton each went 2 for 3 for the Marlins (4-7). Bastiaans had an RBI, and Burton scored.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Norfolk State overtakes S.C. State

Host Norfolk State (8-12, 2-1 MEAC) rallied past South Carolina State 7-5 with a five-run sixth inning, giving the Spartans two victories in their three-game series against the Bulldogs (5-11, 1-2). Lauren Sheehan and Amaya McPherson scored on an error to put the Spartans ahead 6-5.

Visiting Elon outslugged Hampton 20-9, providing the Phoenix (12-12, 5-1 Coastal Athletic Association) with two victories in their three-game set against the Pirates (8-15, 1-5). HU led 4-0 after one inning but yielded 10 runs in the third inning to fall behind 11-4. Aitirihna Aiken, Cassidy Lee and Meagan Ramos drove in two runs each.

Christopher Newport (17-1), ranked seventh in Division III, swept George Fox of Oregon 9-0 and 6-1 in a Cross-Bay Bash doubleheader in Newport News. Brooke Greaver was 4 for 6 for the day, scoring three runs and driving in three. Candace Slaw was 3 for 5 with three runs and three RBIs.
