Two dead in early-morning Chicopee house fire

Two people died Saturday after an early-morning house fire in Chicopee, officials said.

“This is a terribly sad day for the victims’ loved ones and our community,” Chicopee Fire Chief Daniel Stamborski said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the family right now.”

At about 2:15 a.m. Saturday, the Chicopee Fire Department responded to a neighbor’s 911 call about a fire on Hudson Avenue, the statement said. Firefighters found fire shooting through windows on three sides of the two-story, single-family home, according to the statement.

After fighting the fire for more than an hour, firefighters found two people inside the badly damaged home. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said.

Chicopee fire and police officials and State Police are investigating the origin and cause of the fire, according to the statement. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of the victims’ deaths, the statement said.

As of Sunday evening, the identities of the victims have not been released.

The Holyoke, Springfield, and Westover fire departments provided station coverage while Chicopee firefighters battled the fire, according to the statement.
