The New Jersey State Police are seeking the public’s help in locating an incarcerated man who escaped custody while on the way to an Essex County hospital earlier in the week.
Nicholas Voutsas, 25, escaped from a state Department of Health medical transport van that was on its way to University Hospital in Newark on Thursday around 9 a.m., officials said Saturday.
The state Human Services Police Department has charged him with escape, state police said.
Voutsas was last seen near South Orange Avenue and Bergen Street in Newark, near University Hospital. At the time of his escape, he was wearing a burgundy or maroon winter coat, officials said.
Voutsas is a Tier 2 registered sex offender, officials said. He’s roughly 6’0” tall and weighs approximately 260 pounds.
Anyone with information that could assist in locating Voutsas is urged to contact the New Jersey State Police Fugitive Unit tip line at 1-800-437-7839 or email fugitiveinformation@njsp.gov. Anonymous tips are welcome.
