Portland hiker found dead on Mt. Hood

Search-and-rescue teams on Monday recovered the body of a Portland man who had gone missing while hiking on Mount Hood.

Robert Tveite, 38, set out on the Cooper Spur Trail on Saturday and was due to return later that afternoon. When he failed to come back by noon Sunday, his family informed authorities that he was overdue, the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

The sheriff’s office sent out a five-person team from the Hood River Crag Rats, a volunteer group that specializes in mountain rescues, along with a sheriff’s office plane, which ultimately spotted Tveite’s body, officials said.

Two other teams, with search-and-rescue specialists from Portland Mountain Rescue, climbed the trail and were able to recover Tveite’s body on Monday.

Sheriff’s office spokesperson Joel Ives declined to identify the cause of death.
