Beloved Alabama chicken restaurant chain opening new location

A new Guthrie’s is coming to the Birmingham area. The beloved Alabama-founded chain known for its chicken fingers is opening a location in Hoover at 1817 Montgomery Highway. The building formerly housed a Steak N’ Shake, which shuttered in 2024.

Harbert Retail’s Casey Howard represented Guthrie’s in the lease deal, according to an announcement on the real estate firm’s website.

The upcoming Guthrie’s location in Hoover joins a high-traffic retail corridor along U.S. Highway 31 with nearby dining and retail options including Taco Bell, Panda Express, Walgreens, and a development of businesses in the Riverchase Village shopping center.

Founded in 1965 by Hal Guthrie in Haleyville, Ala., Guthrie’s offered a full menu of chicken, burgers, and ice cream before transitioning to a chicken-finger focused menu in 1978.

Now headquartered in Auburn, Guthrie’s has more than 25 locations in Alabama and 48 restaurants around the country.
